PM Reassures Zelenskyy of Continued Support for Ukraine Sovereignty

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen had his second phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on May 29 during which the two acknowledged the other’s efforts and struggles. The Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation released a press statement detailing the conversation later that night.

The call began with President Zelenskyy expressing his profound gratitude for Cambodia’s position on the war in Ukraine. In October of last year, Cambodia was one of 143 countries that voted to defend the principles of the UN Charter which protects the right to territorial sovereignty and opposes annexation. Zelenskyy also thanked the PM for sending humanitarian assistance in January that provided training for demining efforts as a result of the Russian invasion.

Prime Minister Hun Sen reaffirmed his commitment to uphold the UN Charter, encouraging a dialogue which will bring an end to the war and the sufferings of the Ukrainian people. In November, the PM met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba at the Peace Palace where he empathized with Ukraine’s plight, “Cambodia has been through war and been invaded,” he said, “Cambodia understands the feelings of the Ukrainian people.”

President Zelenskyy went on to commended Cambodia’s success as Chair of the 2022 ASEAN summit, during which Cambodia voiced its support for Ukraine’s bid to become an ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner. The status would allow Ukraine to develop friendly relations and participate in mutually beneficial dialogue with ASEAN countries. Prime Minister Hun Sen reaffirmed his continued support of Ukraine’s desire to become an ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner and sent his best wishes to the people of Ukraine.

The conversation ended with President Zelenskyy thanking Prime Minister Hun Sen for the cordial conversation and warmly congratulating the Cambodian government and its people, wishing them continued peace and prosperity.
