Timor-Leste’s Iconic Xanana Gusmão Returns to Power as Prime Minister

TIMOR-LESTE: Xanana Gusmão, the independence leader who served as Timor's first president, has returned to power as prime minister for the second time. Gusmão’s National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT) party won a landslide victory in the 2023 elections, winning 46% of the votes

Citizens voted on Sunday in the fifth parliamentary election since East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste, finally secured its independence in 2002, after 25 years under the control of neighboring Indonesia.

Gusmão, 76, is a popular figure in Timor-Leste. He led the resistance movement against the Indonesian occupation for 24 years. He served as president from 2002 to 2007, and then as prime minister from 2007 to 2015.

In his victory speech, Gusmão promised to unite the country and address its many challenges, including poverty, unemployment, and corruption. He also said that he would work to strengthen Timor's ties with its neighbors and the international community.
