PM Told the Prisons to be Ready to Welcome the Leaders of the Candlelight Party

Phnom Penh: The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, ordered the prison to be ready to welcome the leaders of the Candlelight Party after the party announced its intention to gather people to protest against the decision of the NEC. He appealed to members of the party not to believe in the incitement of the party leaders, while the Minister of Justice to study the law to against the Candlelight Party.

On May 12, the Candlelight Party issued a press release stating that the party would prepare additional documents to apply for registration of candidates for the parliamentary elections to the NEC on 13 May, warning that there will be rallies across the country to oppose the NEC if the NEC continues to reject its application.

In a special audio message on the evening of May 13, PM Hun Sen stated that the party's warning message was a threat to the NEC and freedom of expression in Cambodia.

"I urge you not to join any movement of the candlelight leaders and to order the authorities everywhere not to allow rallies against the public order that Cambodia is preparing for the SEA Games," he said

The Prime Minister ordered the arrest of all candlelight party leaders, both national and sub-national, who could not tolerate public order.

"If you dare to destroy Cambodia's public order and reputation while Cambodia is hosting the SEA Games, we would like to warn you to be careful with what you have done," he said. "Let the prisons be prepared to receive leaders at all levels of the Candlelight Party if they have committed any crimes."

It should also be noted that more than 10 parties have already submitted their lists and applications for the upcoming July 2023 National Assembly election, while the Candlelight Party has not yet been accepted by the NEC. Still, the party is required to submit a copy of the original letter or a copy of the political party registration certificate to the Ministry of Interior, which is certified by the Capital, Province, Municipality, District and Khan Administration. This is according to the letter of notification to meet the deficient conditions sent to the Candlelight Party on May 9.
