PM Named ‘Patron’ of the World Fellowship of Buddhists

PHNOM PENH: Members of the Board of the World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) conferred the title of "Patron" on Prime Minister Hun Sen, citing his devotion to the nation, people and Buddhism in Cambodia.

The President of the WFB, Phan Wannamethee, said in a ceremony at Wat Phnom to honor Prime Minister Hun Sen this morning, 2 May 2023 that the highest honor was bestowed due to the PM’s effective peace-building process resulting in longstanding national unification.

"Samdech Techo Hun Sen has led Cambodia in accordance with the teachings of Buddhism on the path of nation-building and through win-win politics; he has returned the people to prosperity, complete peace, social and religious harmony, environmental and sustainable development," he said.

"Patron" is a title bestowed on the top leaders of both the country and the Buddhist leadership. It is given to those who generously maintain, obey, support and uphold the values of Buddhism and includes actions made through the WFB.

The Prime Minister reiterated that this is an honor not only for him, but for the all of Cambodia, which is a Buddhist nation that remains peaceful, prosperous, and in harmony.

"I would like to say simply that this offer is truly a symbol of the Buddha's wisdom, which has touched the lives of human beings through society, culture, politics and economy," he said.

Currently eight monks and world leaders are named as “Patron” by the WFB including the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, former Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad, the President of Sri Lanka, the King of Thailand, the President of Thailand, the President of Nepal, the President of India, the Prime Minister of Thailand and the President of the Buddhist Federation of Japan.
