Ministry of Agriculture Warns Farmers of Extreme Weather Conditions

PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries informed farmers of the weather forecast which predicts the rainy season will arrive late this year, in the second week of May, with light to moderate rainfall. They also predict that the dry season could last from early July to early August. Such conditions are likely to affect agricultural production.

The announcement from the Ministry of Agriculture on 26 April 2023 was issued to prepare farmers, local authorities and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ agricultural sub-sector to prevent disasters and allow them to respond by maintaining fields properly, storing water and setting up pumps to drain fields as needed.

The Ministry also instructed the capital and provincial Departments of Agriculture and local authorities to cooperate with specialized units to inspect water sources, assess areas that can be irrigated and facilitate the distribution of water use in addition to providing technical assistance and modern crop production techniques to adapt to climate change.

The ministry also warned the fishing industry to prepare for the weather between April and June, which is expected to be very hot, and could drastically lower water levels. It advised the addition of extra water and increasing water movement in ponds to avoid oxygen deprivation, which could kill fish en masse.

The ministry also addressed the risks of livestock health and production, noting that drought deprives livestock of food and water leading to a reduction in disease resistance. The risk of infections is especially high for birds. The ministry recommend farmers take extra care that their animals receive adequate food, water and shelter and that they receive the necessary vaccinations.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries expects its provincial departments, farmers, local authorities and relevant stakeholders to be proactive in cooperating to respond to the extreme weather’s impact on crop production, aquaculture, and animal health.
