Baby Dolphin Spotted in Stung Treng Province

STUNG TRENG: Another baby dolphin was spotted in Stung Treng ‘s Koh Preah commune, making it the third Irrawaddy dolphin born in 2023.

The research team of Kratie and Stung Treng Fisheries Administration Districts alongside WWF recorded the new dolphin on 25 April in the Konsat Island Canyon in Stung Treng Province.

The newborn baby dolphin is about a week old and was seen swimming with two other adult dolphins. The team recorded the births of six dolphins in both 2021 and 2022. The Irrawaddy dolphin is critically endangered and its total population numbers less than 100. Once found throughout the Mekong River, it now only resides in a 180-km long section of the river in Northeast Cambodia.
