Ministry of Public Works Encourages Citizens to Cut Out the Middleman

PHNOM PENH: Senior Minister of Public Works and Transport, Sun Chanthol, encouraged people who need public services, such as vehicle inspection or driver’s license renewal, to go via One Window Service Offices themselves rather than using a broker, which incurs unnecessary expenses. He stressed that the government is working hard to provide better public services to the people and that people should use them.

Speaking at the opening of the Samrong Andet Vehicle Inspection Station in Phnom Penh on 21 April, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol said that accessing public services is not complicated and that prices for the services are clearly posted when citizens go through the One Window Service Offices. He said that using middlemen to help with driver's license renewal and vehicle inspections is unnecessary and a waste of time.

He said, "We hear people say that vehicle inspection or renewing a driver's license costs $200 to $300. To that I say, ‘no!’ The price is clearly stated. People should not be using middlemen, but rather they should go direct to the One Window Service Offices, which we have here in Phnom Penh. In the provinces we have offices in Sihanoukville, Siem Reap and other areas where we provide such services. So please, do not use a middleman because it costs a lot of money and is a waste of time.”

Delegating errands to middlemen has long been practiced by people as a way to avoid the complex administrative procedures of ministries and institutions. However, Sun Chanthol stated that people can now go themselves through the One Window Service Offices, which have simplified unnecessarily complicated procedures.
