Delta Variant Cases Climb Along the Border with Thailand

Phnom Penh: The Ministry of Health has announced that more cases of the Delta variant of Covid-19 have been detected in migrant workers returning from Thailand. These workers are now all under quarantine and are being closely monitored. The health ministry has also issued a warning for residents of border provinces to be vigilant in their communities if there see workers arriving without having undergone quarantine.

The Ministry of Health confirmed that the latest Delta variant cases were recorded by the Pasteur Institute in Phnom Penh. The 21 cases were detected in migrant workers, but other people, with both direct and indirect contact with those workers, have also tested positive. Four cases were recorded in healthcare workers. An additional six people contracted the Delta variant directly from a Covid-19 cases,

While eight more people tested positive after indirect contact.

They bring to 114 the number of Delta variant cases reported in Cambodia so far.

Delta is an extremely contagious variant of Covid-19 – over 50% more transmissible than the Alpha variant, which itself is 50% more contagious than the original coronavirus.
