King Bestows "Samdech" Title to Gen. Men Sam An

PHNOM PENH: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Assembly-Senate Relations Gen. Men Sam An was given the title of ‘Samdech’ by the King, making her the second woman to have received the title, which is bestowed upon individuals deemed to have made worthy contributions to the nation.

In a royal letter signed on 8 April, King Norodom Sihamoni confirmed Gen. Men Sam An’s title as Samdech KitiSangaha Bondit, a title with deep meaning. ‘Samdech’ is Cambodia’s highest honor and is equivalent to ‘your excellency.’ ‘Kitti’ means glory; ‘Sanka’ means salvation and ‘Bandith’ indicates deep knowledge or wisdom. With these words combined, Sam An’s new title can be translated to “one who is prosperous and generous in helping others.”

The King praised her as an outstanding leader who is loved by the people and has helped lead the nation in accordance with the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia since 1993. He credited her participation in building the legal system for the benefit of society thereby achieving peace, stability, national unity, and national development in all fields. He went on to commend her for defending democracy and country, promoting better social security and international cooperation, and maintaining national independence and territorial integrity under Prime Minister Hun Sen’s leadership.

The King finished by praising her for her loyalty to the throne, respect for Buddhism, and protection of the Cambodian monarchy.
