Day Four at Tokyo 2020 and More Athletes Test Positive

INTERNATIONAL: It’s day four of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the medal table is already filling up. The standings see China in the lead with 6 gold medals and 13 in total. The Chinese claimed victory in women’s synchronized diving and men’s weightlifting, among others. Second are the US with 5 golds and 12 medals overall, seizing first places in men’s shooting and men’s swimming. Host nation Japan is doing great, also with 5 gold medals in the standings.

The biggest shock of the weekend though came on the basketball court, with the US losing to France, and ending a 17 year-winning streak at the Olympics, having last lost in Athens 2004, when they had to settle for bronze.

Over at the Olympic village it’s not been the best start, with 127 people testing positive for Covid-19 since the first officials and athletes started arriving. National teams and workers have all been tested in recent days. Monitoring will continue, but despite the situation people are still euphoric and regardless of the spectator ban, supporters managed to line the public route of the triathlon, where Norway's Kristian Blummenfelt won Gold. Many turned out for a chance to watch international athletes go past, even taking a day off work. All signs of a relatively positive and safe start to these Covid-plagued Olympics.
