Trump Still Able to Run for Office After Indictment

NEW YORK: The New York City court's indictment of former President Donald Trump over money laundering will not deter Trump from seeking US presidency in 2024.

According to the US Constitution, any presidential candidate must be a US citizen by birth, must have lived in the US for at least 14 years and must be at least 35 years of age. Only those who take have partaken in a rebellion against the government are not eligible to run for president.

The Washington Post quotes New York law professor Anna G. Cominsky as saying that there is no constitutional requirement to run for president and that there is no clear constitutional prohibition against prosecution or even sentencing.

Trump is charged with 34 felony counts related to US $130,000 of hush-money paid to adult film actress, Stormy Daniels, in 2016 to prevent her from publicizing their sexual encounter.

Following his arraignment on 30 March, the 45th US president said in a speech that he believed US prosecutors used a strategy from the former Soviet Union to use the legal system to try and stop him from running for president, once they realized that they could not win the election in their favor.

Trump is currently involved in other cases, such as the 6 January riot on Capitol Hill and the theft of classified documents, which could still prevent him from running for president.

A Reuters and Ipsos poll released on Monday found that 51% of Americans, including 80% of Republicans, said they believed the allegations made against Trump were politically motivated.
