INTERNATIONAL: The easing of Covid-19 restrictions in the Bolivian executive capital, La Paz, was good news for children and their parents this weekend. It meant their annual Go-Kart Race could go ahead for the first time since 2019. Fortunately, speed is not one of the main factors for a prize.
In fact, if you have a need for speed, this is not the event for you. The go-karts are all home-made and appear to go quicker with a parent pushing, than on their own. The drivers are all children though, so perhaps it’s best that they don’t careen down the hillside streets.
This Bolivian version of go-karting has been a regular fixture for local families in La Paz since 1950. Pulling together various spare parts, parents and their children work as a team to build their vehicles. A prize is awarded for the fastest one, but prizes are also awarded for vehicle ingenuity and design.
