Japan Wants to Build Waste-To-Energy Plant in Phnom Penh

PHNOM PENH: Japanese company Mizuda has expressed its interest in establishing a waste-to-energy plant in Phnom Penh after having collected garbage in the city for almost two years.

Speaking at a meeting with Phnom Penh Governor Khoung Sreng on 28 March 2023, Mizuda Group CEO Shan Jian Ming said his company would like to expand its investment to include the incineration of waste-to-energy. In China, the Mizuda Group has already successfully built 33 incinerators that convert waste into electricity.

Governor Khuong Sreng welcomed the idea, but stated that the decision rests with the Royal Government.

He said, "This work is decided by the Royal Government of Cambodia, but as for me, I would like to support this project. If the Royal Government of Cambodia allows the Phnom Penh administration to manage it, they will be the ones to provide permission to the Mizuda Group . ”

There are currently three companies that collect waste in Phnom Penh, amassing about 3,000 tons of garbage daily.
