Cambodia Supports Morocco's Sovereignty Over Disputed Western Sahara

MOROCCO: Cambodian Foreign Minister, DPM Prak Sokhonn, has told Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, that the Kingdom of Cambodia supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco in the disputed Western Sahara territory. This is according to a joint statement released by the Foreign Ministers of Cambodia and Morocco on Monday, 27 March 2023.

In the joint statement, DPM Prak Sokhonn stated that Cambodia fully supports the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and the Secretary-General's envoy for the desert, to reach a peaceful resolution to the dispute, and commends Morocco's sharp, practical and credible efforts to reach a political solution.

"In this sense, Cambodia fully supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and respects Morocco's efforts to reach a political settlement to the conflict in the region," said the DPM.

The Western Sahara conflict is an ongoing conflict between the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic/Polisario Front and the Kingdom of Morocco. The conflict stems from the Polisario uprising against Spanish colonial forces from 1973 to 1975 and the subsequent Western Sahara War against Morocco between 1975 and 1991. Today, the conflict is dominated by the unarmed civilian campaigns of the Polisario Front and their self-proclaimed SADR.
