PM Says 300 Flights per Week Will Restore Chinese Tourism Numbers

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen said that during his visit to China, in a meeting with President Xi Jinping, they discussed the operation of about 300 flights per week between the two countries. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Cambodia welcomed more than 2 million Chinese tourists annually.

In a speech at the Vanda Institute’s graduation ceremony at the Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Center on 22 March 2023, Prime Minister Hun Sen said that the Chinese President confirmed that Cambodia is the first country to welcome Chinese tourists again.

"According to the plan, with 300 flights per week [between China and Cambodia], we can receive 3 to 5 million Chinese tourists a year, which is good," said the Prime Minister.

During his speech, the Prime Minister noted that Thailand is a big country and still strives to attract 10 million Chinese tourists per year, while Singapore also tries to attract tourists from China and other countries.

In 2018 Cambodia welcomed more than 2.3 million Chinese tourists, which amounted to 35.7% of the 6.6 million total international tourists. According to the Roadmap for Recovery of Cambodia Tourism During and Post Covid-19, issued by the Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia plans to welcome about 7 million international tourists in 2025.
