First Lady Sends Condolences to Family of Woman Who Died from Botched Abortion

PHNOM PENH: The President of the Cambodian Red Cross, First Lady Bun Rany Hun Sen, has offered her condolences to the family of a young woman who died after wrongly having her small intestine removed in a botched abortion at Deum Angkrong Clinic in Kampong Speu province.

First Lady Bun Rany Hun Sen assigned the First Deputy Secretary General of the Cambodian Red Cross, Men Neary Sopheak, to attend the funeral of the young woman, Soeun Srey Oun, on her behalf.

Srey Oun was transported from Calmette Hospital back to her hometown in Kampot in the early hours of Thursday, 16 March 2023, at the request of her family, as her condition was worsening.

At Srey Oun’s funeral, the First Deputy Secretary General of the Cambodian Red Cross shared that First Lady Bun Rany Hun Sen was extremely shocked to learn of her passing, as she had been offering medical support and praying for her recovery since first learning about the horrific incident.

"First Lady Bun Rany Hun Sen gives her condolences and prayers for Soeun Srey Oun so that she may rest in peace,” said Men Neary Sopheak.

The First Deputy Secretary General of the Cambodian Red Cross also offered words of encouragement to Srey Oun’s husband, Pheng Voeun, on behalf of the First Lady. She told him to stay strong, strive to overcome this extremely difficult time and continue living for his three-year-old daughter, so that she can grow up to have a bright future.

Soeun Srey Oun died at her hometown in Kampot at around 4 pm on Thursday, after doctors could no longer stabilize her quickly deteriorating condition. Srey Oun had been receiving non-stop treatment for the past three months, both in Cambodia and in Thailand, after her small intestine was wrongly removed in a botched abortion at Deum Angkrong Clinic in Kampong Speu province.

The clinic was shut down by the Ministry of Health in November 2022 after news of the shocking incident spread online.
