Phnom Penh: The Phnom Penh Municipal Authority has restored the flow in the capital’s main drainage canals, by removing more than 20,000 cubic metres of mud, as well as more than 2,000 cubic meters of garbage. It’s hoped the clean-up will avoid flooding in Por Senchey, Sen Sok and Meanchey.

Director of the Drainage and Pumping Unit at Phnom Penh’s Department of Public Works and Transport, Mr. Duong Chansarath, says the capital’s main canal has been fitted with a drainage unit, pumping and wastewater treatment stations, together with the rehabilitation of five of its feeder canals. Work was completed on Wednesday. On Thursday 22 July, teams began work on the Boeung Tompun canal.

Mr. Chansarath says the canal plays an important role in releasing water in Por Senchey, Sen Sok and Meanchey districts, with water then flowing down to Choeung Ek. To keep the canals flowing, he has asked residents to store their garbage until collection day and not throw it into the city’s canals.
