PHNOM PENH: Two landfills, one in Kampong Chhnang and the other in Pursat, were officially inaugurated on Wednesday morning, 22 February 2023, in a ceremony presided over by the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, a representative from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and provincial branch leaders from Kampong Chhnang and Pursat.

According to the Ministry of Public Works, the landfills at these two sites are among 12 designated areas in the Tonle Sap Urban Environmental Management Improvement Project, Phase 1, being implemented under a loan from ADB.

The Minister of Public Works stated that the two landfills will contribute to improving quality of life, and especially in reducing pollution and subsequent health problems.

The landfills in Kampong Chhnang and Pursat provinces cost more than US $3 million to complete. The landfill in Kampong Chhnang has a capacity of 120,000 cubic meters, and can be used for up to 10 years. The landfill in Pursat has a storage capacity of up to 140,000 cubic meters, and can be used for up to 15 years.
