Cambodia Studies Building Another Road to Phnom Penh International Airport

PHNOM PENH: Phnom Penh Capital Administration and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport are conducting a feasibility study to build another road along the railway line behind the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) to Phnom Penh International Airport, in order to reduce traffic congestion.

This was confirmed by the Governor of Phnom Penh, Khuong Sreng, during a meeting with the Chief Executive Officer of Cambodia Airports, Cyril Girot, on Monday at Phnom Penh Capital Hall.

The Phnom Penh Governor spoke of the general situation in the capital city in light of Cambodia's economic growth, especially challenges such as increased traffic congestion and waste production.

Governor Khuong Sreng confirmed that the Phnom Penh Capital Administration and the Ministry of Public Works are currently studying the build of another road along the railway line behind ITC in Toul Kork district, to Phnom Penh International airport, in order to reduce traffic congestion along Russian Federation Road.

The CEO of Cambodia Airports, Cyril Girot, said that he was very interested in the development of Phnom Penh, and noted that when he first arrived in the city over a year ago, he saw there more than 3,000 high-rise buildings, exhibiting a massive amount of growth and progress, which he is very happy about.

He said that both Cambodia and the world have faced similar challenges related to the Covid-19 pandemic, however, the country has been largely able to return to normalcy after the economy was reopened. The number of flights has been steadily increasing and Cambodia Airports have also been promoting better flight operations.

During the meeting, Governor Khuong Sreng also agreed to establish a working group of companies, in cooperation with the working group of the Phnom Penh Capital Administration, to modify and install more traffic lights in front of Phnom Penh International Airport to reduce congestion and traffic accidents.

A section of the road to Phnom Penh International Airport, along the railway, was originally approved for construction by the Ministry of Public Works in 2019, however, this construction was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
