PM Berates Politicians Living Abroad for Insulting His Family During Period of Mourning

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen, while mourning his sister-in-law, who passed away on Friday, has urged politicians who have insulted his family to remain human.

Prime Minister Hun Sen made a post on his Facebook page on Sunday night, 5 February 2023, describing First Lady Bun Rany Hun Sen’s loss of siblings. She lost her brother during the Khmer Rouge, and now has lost a sister.

The Prime Minister said that a “group of criminals from abroad” had been making insults to his wife while his family was suffering.

He said that even if their political leader is bad, they should make sure to remain human themselves.

"At the moment, a bad group living abroad said that my wife was seriously ill when she actually had not been away from her sister from before the funeral until she was placed in the coffin," he wrote. "I want to tell these bad guys that even if their boss (leader) is bad, please remain human and kind, try to focus on your health rather than on my family. It's really bad, both the [leader] and the followers are not human at all."

On Friday, 3 February 2023, Mrs. Bun Sotha, the youngest sister of First Lady Bun Rany Hun Sen, passed away at the age of 67 due to illness.

Her body will be laid to rest at #66, Street 528, in Boeung Kak I, Toul Kork, Phnom Penh, and she will be buried at Wat Botum Vatei on Tuesday, 7 February 2023.

Members of many different political parties have expressed their condolences and joined in on mourning the First Lady and Prime Minister’s loss.
