NEC Taking Legal Action Against Facebook Account Named "Legal Thief"

PHNOM PENH: The National Election Committee (NEC) has publicly denounced an anonymous Facebook account named 'Legal Thief' that is using a photo of NEC Chairman, Prach Chan, on its profile. The NEC has stated that it is now cooperating with relevant institutions to take measures to find the account holder and hold them legally responsible.

In a press release issued on Friday, 27 January 2023, NEC Spokesperson, Dim Sovannarom, stated that the Facebook account's name and photo usage of the NEC Chairman is immoral and unacceptable as it is done with malicious intent to insult the national institution and, more broadly, destroy democracy in Cambodia.

"The NEC has been cooperating with the relevant institutions to take measures to find those who pollute our society, which is detrimental to the reputation and dignity of the National Election Committe, which is a supreme body, as stated in the Constitution," he said.

Spokesperson Dim Sovannarom also called on the public to disseminate information professionally and responsibly to avoid distortion and defamation, otherwise the NEC has no choice but to take legal action.
