Japan’s Assistance for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC)

On 19 January 2023, the Government of Japan decided to contribute US$220,000 for the Extraordinary Chamber in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) for 2023. The ECCC has played an important role for the conclusion of entire peace process in Cambodia, deliberation of justice to the victims of the Khmer Rouge and strengthening the rule of law in Cambodia and beyond. Furthermore, the ECCC is expected to succeed its legacy to the next generation and to disseminate the significance of accomplishment of the Khmer Rouge trials to the public under its residual function.

The Government of Japan has been assisting the ECCC since its inception and, as of today, the financial assistance from Japan amounts to US$ 8 8.9 million including the afore mentioned contribution, approximately 27 % of the total funds contributed by donors to the national and UN components of the ECCC. Moreover, Japan, along with

France, has actively followed the proceedings of the ECCC as co - chair of the Friends of the ECCC.
