PHNOM PENH: The Prime Minister of Cambodia joined the celebration for 100 years of Christianity in Cambodia on Friday, 27 January 2023 at Koh Pich.

During the ceremony, Prime Minister Hun Sen delivered a speech where he remarked, "This gathering is a demonstration of the progress of Christianity in Cambodia under the shade of peace."

Christianity first came to Cambodia in 1923 and has now been practiced in the country for 100 years. There are currently 114,402 registered members of the Christian Church in Cambodia.

Mr. Horn, a member of the American Church who has been working in Cambodia for 13 months, told EAC News that he was pleased to be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the presence of Christianity in Cambodia, and was even happier to see the Prime Minister attending.

"I feel great, it is a good opportunity for us to be blessed to meet with Hun Sen and be able to talk about our religion," he said.

Practicing Christian, Neou Sokhom, also expressed his happiness and support for the Prime Minister's speech.

"I think it's a good sign that the head of government supports and encourages us," he said. "I hope that as Christians we will continue to encourage and work together to contribute to the development of our nation."

Christianity officially came to Cambodia as a Protestant denomination in 1923 through the missionary Dr. Arthur Hammond and his wife, as well as David W. Ellison.

Christianity as well as other religions were suspended during the Khmer Rouge regime, however in 1990, Cambodian Christians were able to once again enjoy full freedom of religion, with legal permission to reopen churches for worship.
