Poipet Casino Building Catches Fire Again While Being Demolished

BANTEAY MEANCHEY: The recently burned-down Grand Diamond City Casino in Poipet city caught fire again on Tuesday, 24 January 2023, while one of the buildings was being dismantled.

The demolition team says that the fire broke out at around 10 am on Tuesday in a room on the third floor while a group of technicians were cutting parts of metal to dismantle the building on the north side of the road. The spatter from cutting the metal reportedly caused the fire to start. The team used fire extinguishers for about half an hour to put the fire out.

On the night of 28-29 December 2022, a fire broke out across three buildings at Grand Diamond City Casino, with extensive damage done to two of the buildings, and one building at Poipet Resort. 57 people were rescued from the building, while 27 people lost their lives (mostly Thai nationals). Additionally, over 50 safes were recovered.

A team has been working to demolish the two heavily damaged buildings of the Grand Diamond City Casino on the south and north sides of the road. The demolition has been ongoing for a month and is currently 30% complete. Several of the casino's safes have been discovered during the building dismantling process.
