Cambodia to Name a ‘Cambodia-Maldives Friendship Street’

MALÉ: Cambodia will choose a street in a coastal province and name it the ‘Cambodia-Maldives Friendship Street’, as a symbol of the friendship between the two countries.

This information was revealed by Prime Minister Hun Sen during a joint press conference with the President of the Republic of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, following their bilateral talks in Malé, the capital city of Maldives, on Monday morning, 16 January 2023.

Prime Minister Hun Sen took the opportunity to extend an invitation from His Majesty the King of Cambodia to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to pay an official visit to Cambodia, if possible, for the opening ceremony of the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games to be hosted in May this year in Phnom Penh.

He also added that the ‘Cambodia-Maldives Friendship Street’ can be inaugurated during this forthcoming visit.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Hun Sen thanked Maldives for its support of Cambodia’s candidacy as an observer country of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and in turn, reaffirmed Cambodia’s support of Maldives’ request to become an observer of ASEAN.

Prior to the joint press conference, both leaders also witnessed the signing ceremony of six cooperation deals covering various areas, such as diplomacy, health, education and tourism.

Cambodia and the Republic of Maldives first established diplomatic ties on 21 September 1995. This year, to mark the 28th anniversary of relations, Maldives will send its Ambassador to Thailand to present his credentials in Phnom Penh, while Cambodia will send its Ambassador to India to present his credentials in Maldives.
