National Road No. 7 Will Be an Important Economic Road for Cambodia

KAMPONG CHAM: The Minister of Public Works and Transport, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, has said that the expansion and upgrading of National Road No. 7, for which a groundbreaking ceremony was held on Monday morning, will allow the road to become part of an important infrastructural network connecting the capital city with provinces across the country.

The Senior Minister said that the construction and expansion of this road is also in response to the current level of development in the country, which has seen an increase in traffic volume and growth in overall transportation needs.

He added that once the expansion and upgrade of National Road No. 7 is complete, the new section of the road will be strong and wide and will play an important role in facilitating the travel and transportation of agricultural products across the country, and will also help to promote the development and socio-economic activities of Kampong Cham and other bordering provinces. These provinces have potential to engage in exchange and trade of major commodities and agricultural products.

This section of the national road will also contribute to the promotion of tourism in Kampong Cham province, especially facilitating the transportation of goods and products from Kampong Cham and border provinces to the closed river port that is under construction, so that these goods and products can be exported to both domestic and international markets by sea.

In addition, this section of the national road is also part of Asian Highway 11 (AH11), which connects from the main road network to the border area of Cambodia and continues on to the road networks of other countries in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS).

The Prime Minister of Cambodia has also stated that this section of National Road No. 7 will act as an important connection not only to Kampong Cham province, but many other provinces in Cambodia.

The project to expand and upgrade the section of National Road No. 7 from Skun to Kampong Cham will take 40 months to complete, with a total budget of more than US $117 million from a concessional loan provided by the Government of China.
