PM Remarks on Family and Political Leadership

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen made a post on his official Facebook page on Thursday morning, 5 January 2023, including a photo of him with his family and a caption saying, "Large rice fields require more seeds in order to get a larger harvest; small rice fields use fewer seeds and also get less harvest. This is a natural law that can be seen in the political system and the family. This family has grown from two to 32 members. I hope everyone understands my word."

The Prime Minister's statement can be interpreted through two facets: family and political leadership.

Regarding family, Prime Minister Hun Sen and First Lady Bun Rany Hun Sen started as only two people in 1976. They became a small family in 1977, and eventually grew to six members in 1982. Starting with this family foundation, the Prime Minister worked hard to care for, protect, and educate his children until they were old enough to work and start their own families. Now, the Prime Minister’s core family has grown to have a total of 32 members.

In regard to political leadership, Prime Minister Hun Sen is currently the president of the most influential party in Cambodia, the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP).

The CPP grew from just a few members fighting to overthrow the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979 to a political party of millions in 2022. The success of the party depended on its leadership, which had to give its members confidence and offer everyone the opportunity to participate and use their abilities to serve the nation and the people, allowing the party to gain more human resources. These human resources continue to increase through the leadership of the party, as the Prime Minister stated, "Large rice fields require more seeds for a larger harvest."

This Friday, 5 January 2023, marks the 47th anniversary of Prime Minister Hun Sen’s marriage to his wife. Two days later, on 7 January 2023, will be the 43rd anniversary of the victory over the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime.

Prime Minister Hun Sen has shown that he was able to lead both his family and party successfully until now.
