UPDATE: 10 Dead, Nearly 60 Injured in Poipet Casino Fire

BANTEAY MEANCHEY: The Deputy Governor of Banteay Meanchey Province, Ngor Mengchruon, confirmed that a large fire started at a casino in Poipet close to midnight on Wednesday, 28 December, and lasted all night and through to Thursday morning, 29 December. Ten people were killed and nearly 60 were injured, according to the latest reports.

The Banteay Meanchey Deputy Governor said that guests and casino staff were trapped in the building during the fire and many panicked and jumped out of the building, causing death and injuries. Many have been rushed to the Thai Department and City Referral Hospital.

The blaze spread across three buildings, starting from the Grand Diamond City building in the south and spreading to the Grand Diamond City Casino building north of the road, then finally spreading to the Poipet City casino building on the west side.

According to preliminary investigations, the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in the ceiling of the Grand Diamond Casino, which is a 17-story building.

While the building was up in flames, the Minister of Interior, DPM Sar Kheng, and the National Disaster Management Committee also led a team to the site to aid with the extinguishing process.

The fire was finally extinguished at 11 am on Thursday, in a joint effort between the Cambodian and Thai intervention forces, totaling nearly 1,000 people, 30 fire trucks and more than 20 ambulances.
