AICHR President Meets UN Representative to Discuss Preparations for Second Special Meeting

SIEM REAP: The President of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) 2022 and the Chairman of the Cambodian Human Rights Commission (CHRC), Keo Remy, met with the Representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Cynthia Veliko, on Tuesday afternoon, 15 November, to discuss preparations for the Second Special Meeting of AICHR 2022.

The meetings between AICHR and the United Nations started in 2018, with the aim of strengthening relations and cooperation between the two bodies in order to better protect and promote human rights in the ASEAN region.

The Second Special Meeting of AICHR and Related Meetings 2022 is being held at the Empress Angkor Hotel in Siem Reap from 15-19 November 2022. The meeting is chaired by the President of the CHRC and the Chairman of AICHR 2022, Keo Remy, and will see the participation of representatives from all ASEAN member states and the ASEAN Secretariat.

The second special meeting of AICHR 2022 will review and discuss the concept document of AICHR’s priority activities between 2019-2022, the updates on the priority activities from 2014-2022, reports on activities already implemented, progress of programs not yet implemented, and other important documents.

Chairman Keo Remy led an AICHR delegation to meet with representatives of the United Nations in a separate meeting on Wednesday afternoon, 16 November, to discuss cooperation between the two bodies in protecting and promoting human rights in the ASEAN region.

At the end of the second special meeting of AICHR 2022, there will be a handover ceremony for the AICHR Chairmanship to go to the Indonesian representative for 2023.
