More Than 10,000 Troops Ready to Maintain Order and Security During ASEAN Summit

PHNOM PENH: The Royal Government of Cambodia has prepared more than 10,000 law enforcement personnel to maintain security, order, and safety during the ASEAN Summit and related meetings to be held next week from 10 to 13 November in Phnom Penh.

The Royal Government of Cambodia has assigned and prepared about 12,000 law enforcement personnel as well as other means and mechanisms to maintain security and order during the ASEAN Summit and related meetings, including key safety destinations and accommodation.

These law enforcement personnel include officers from the National Police Force, the Royal Gendarmerie, and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces. In total, there are 14 different units and institutions that make up the Phnom Penh Municipal Unity Command.

Phnom Penh Capital Hall Spokesperson, Met Meas Pheakdey, also confirmed on Thursday, 3 November, that city decorations to welcome delegates arriving in Phnom Penh for the summit are about 90% complete. He added that the Phnom Penh Municipal Unity Command has also planned and organized the main roads that delegations must pass through, with the highest attention placed on maintaining security in those areas and with security forces already stationed and patrolling those roads from now onwards.

The Spokesperson also called on residents and businesses of Phnom Penh to be prepared to participate in maintaining security, order and the surrounding environment during the ASEAN Summit, with request for their understanding that delegations will pass through roads people live along and regularly use, causing disruptions to daily traffic.

It should be noted that this is the third time that Cambodia has hosted the ASEAN Summit and related meetings, the first time in 2002, the second time in 2012, and the third time now in 2022.
