PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen has said that Victory Day on 7 January is not just a victory for the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), but a victory for all Cambodian people from the genocidal regime of Pol Pot.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony for students of the Royal University of Law and Economics on Tuesday morning, 1 November, the Prime Minister said that this victory helped the Cambodian people overcome the killings by the Khmer Rouge. He said that if it this victory had happened only three months later, many more Cambodians would have died.
Unable to continue watching the massacre of Cambodians by the Khmer Rouge, the Prime Minister fled to Vietnam to seek help in overthrowing the ruthless regime. Victory was finally achieved on 7 January 1979. It is this victory that saved the Cambodian people from being killed any further and has enabled Cambodia to develop and be as peaceful as it is today.
