Cambodian Human Rights Committee Condemns Sam Rainsy

PHNOM PENH: The Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC) has strongly condemned Sam Rainsy who made insulting comments about His Majesty the King of Cambodia .

"We strongly condemn this incident and call on the authorities to take the strictest legal action against this prisoner and his party who dare to commit such a serious insult. [It is] Intolerable," wrote the CHRC.

The CHRC states that it has observed Sam Rainsy always violating the rights of others, and especially causing insult to the King, who is the head of state, which is in violation of the Constitution and causes unrest, incites anarchy and affects Cambodia's prestige because the King is a symbol of national unity and sustainability.

The CHRC cites Article 7 of the Cambodian Constitution, which clearly states that the King cannot be violated by anyone and that insults to the King shall be punished by the law as stated in Article 437 of the Constitution, and the Law on the Amendment of the Penal Code. Additionally, the exercise of personal rights and freedoms of individuals must not affect the rights and freedoms of others, which is clearly defined in Article 31 of the Constitution.

The CHRC has expressed it is committed to respecting the throne and marching with the King of Cambodia, who is the supreme patriotic and revered figure of the Cambodian people, and is also committed to respecting the Cambodian Constitution.
