Six Survivors of Kandal Ferry Accident Receive Donations from the Cambodian Red Cross

KANDAL: The Cambodian Red Cross (CRC) has donated food and money to four children and two other passengers who survived the ferry boat accident in Leuk Daek district of Kandal province last week.

On Saturday, 15 October, the First Deputy Secretary-General of the CRC, Men Neary Sopheak, led a delegation to visit and provide donations to the four surviving children of the Kandal ferry accident.

Each child’s family received 50 kg of rice, one box of noodles, 10 cans of fish, and 2 million riel (roughly US $500), with 1 million riel of each donation coming from the CRC branch in Kandal province.

The CRC team arrived at the homes of the survivors in Koh Chamroeun village, Kampong Phnom commune, Leuk Daek district, Kandal province to show support to the children who survived.

First Deputy Secretary-General, Men Neary Sopheak, also relayed a message on behalf of the CRC President, First Lady Bun Rany Hun Sen, telling the children that they were very fortunate to have survived this tragedy.

The First Lady’s message also added that the children must continue to take care of their health, study hard, always be careful when utilizing waterway vehicles to cross the river for school, and to always wear life jackets when riding the river ferry to ensure such tragedy does not occur again.

However, she also stressed the responsibility of ferry boat operators in ensuring adequate life jackets and protective gear are available, and in checking the condition of the boat for the utmost safety of passengers. While there are laws and safety precautions for road traffic, there still needs to be consideration given to waterways traffic safety as well.

On the evening of 14 October, First Lady Bun Rany Hun Sen also assigned CRC officials to provide donations to the 11 families who lost loved ones in this ferry accident. Each family received 100 kg of rice, five boxes of noodles, 50 cans of fish, five cases of orange juice and five million riel (roughly US $1,250), with 2 million riel of each donation coming from the CRC branch in Kandal province.
