PHNOM PENH: From 2018 to 2022, 50 foreigners have renounced their previous citizenships to become Cambodian citizens. A Spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior clarified that those who gave up their respective citizenships did so because of the law in those countries.

In a report presented at a press conference held at the Council of Ministers on Friday morning, 14 October, Interior Ministry Spokesperson Khieu Sopheak said that in the first nine months of 2022, four people gave up their previous citizenships to become citizens of Cambodia, while in 2021 there were 19, in 2020 there were 11, none in 2019 and 16 in 2018.

The Spokesperson added that this naturalization process gives these foreigners the same rights as the Cambodian people, and clarified that most applicants have been investors.
