ASEAN Chair Promotes ASEAN Green Agreement Framework for Disaster Response

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen, the 2022 ASEAN Chairman, has reiterated the initiative to establish a framework for the ASEAN Green Agreement, which will significantly contribute to orienting ASEAN towards a green future of sustainability and competitiveness.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 28th ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council meeting on Thursday, 13 October, Prime Minister Hun Sen said that achieving sustainable socio-economic development is inseparable from also proactively addressing the threats and effects of climate change.

He cited the recent example of when the ASEAN region was devastated by a typhoon that damaged the economy and claimed many lives. In this regard, the Prime Minister urged for a reconsideration of the ASEAN Green Agreement framework, which will significantly contribute to helping ASEAN orientate towards a sustainable green future, while maintaining competitiveness.

Previously, at the opening ceremony of the 54th ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting and Related Meetings on 14 September 2022, Prime Minister Hun Sen had also urged ASEAN to consider initiating the ASEAN Green Deal framework.

The Prime Minister has raised this matter in light of the current regional and global situation, where ASEAN and the whole world are grappling with the effects of climate change and still aiming to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

He believes that the ASEAN Green Agreement will allow the ASEAN region to gradually transform itself into a green future that is sustainable, efficient, resource efficient, resilient and economically competitive.
