Government to Set Up Working Group to Facilitate Children of Migrant Workers’ Education

PHNOM PENH: The Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, Heng Sour, has confirmed that the Royal Government is establishing a working group to cooperate with countries that accept Cambodian migrant workers in order facilitate the education of their children.

Speaking at a press conference on the achievements made by the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training over the past five years on Wednesday morning, 12 October, Secretary of State Heng Sour confirmed that the Ministry is considering the possibility of establishing a Khmer language school in the overseas community, in addition to helping them attend general education schools.

"All those countries may allow their children and relatives to register [in school] but it is to learn in the native language, so [we may look into] making teaching in Khmer available for [the children of migrant workers],” he said. “Workers and their children there can gain general knowledge and also not forget their native language.”

The Secretary of State of the Ministry of Labor stated that in addition to this work, the Ministry has also been cooperating with the private sector in forming employment opportunities, educating citizens and youth, and providing information about the labor market to citizens who wish to work abroad. In particular, the Ministry is focusing on providing advice to help workers successfully find jobs.

The Ministry has compiled 520,000 pieces of job market information over the past five years, from 2017 to 2022, and the number of people registering for employment with the National Employment Agency has increased from more than 40,000 to more than 90,000 people, with more than 10,000 having been employed.

According to a report by the Ministry of Labor, as of August 2022, 1.3 million Cambodian workers were working abroad, most of them in Thailand (more than 1.2 million). More than 40,000 workers are also situated in Korea, while there are more than 20,000 in Malaysia, more than 10,000 in Japan, more than 8,000 in Singapore, nearly 2,000 in Hong Kong, and nearly 40 working in Saudi Arabia.

According to the Spokesperson, in 2022, more than 1.3 million Cambodian migrant workers sent about US $2.7 billion in remittances to their relatives in their hometowns.
