Cambodian National Assembly Representative Attends G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit in Indonesia

PHNOM PENH: The Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, Propaganda and Information of the National Assembly, Sous Yara, as a representative of National Assembly President, Heng Samrin, attended the G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit (P20) in Jakarta, Indonesia, held under the theme "Strengthening the Role of Parliament for Sustainable Economic Recovery" from 5-7 October 2022.

The meeting was chaired by the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, the President of the National Assembly of Indonesia, Puan Maharani, and the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Duarte Pacheco. The meeting was attended by the parliamentary leaders of all G20 member countries, 200 host guests and international organizations from 30 different countries.

Four key topics were discussed and shared by all leaders, including the promotion of sustainable development and a green economy, emerging challenges on food security, energy, and the economy, effective parliamentary work and building a strong democracy and social environment with gender equality, and the promotion of women's rights.

The Cambodian delegation met with the chairmen and vice chairmen of parliament from the several different countries, including the United Arab Emirates, India, Britain, Azerbaijan, Singapore, Fiji, China, Kazakhstan, and the IPU. During the meeting, the United Arab Emirates delegation agreed in principle to accept the invitation of the Cambodian National Assembly to attend the 43rd IPA General Assembly, which Cambodia will host from 20-25 November 2022.

Meanwhile, the Cambodian delegation also met with the Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee of the Indonesian National Assembly. The Indonesian delegation also confirmed the participation of the President of the Indonesian Parliament in the 43rd IPA General Assembly in Cambodia.

The meeting adopted a statement by the chairperson focusing on strengthening the role of parliament in promoting culture, peace, gender equality, tolerance, and solidarity in the region and the world for a sustainable economic recovery, and announced the ninth P20 meeting to be hosted by the Indian Parliament in the coming days.
