PM to Prepare Rice Seeds to Restore From Flood Damage

Phnom Penh: The Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Sen has ordered the Acting Minister of Agriculture, Deputy Prime Minister Aun Pornmoniroth to send experts to the local level in cooperation with sub-national authorities and the National Committee for Disaster Management to assess the impact and damage to crops, rice and other crops so that the government can restore the seeds to the people to grow.

In the special voice message on October 8, 2022, PM Hun Sen spoke about the impact of floods, which caused a lot of damage to infrastructure and human life. Moreover, it affects the rice and mixed crops that Cambodian farmers have grown.

He said that the state needs to providing rice seeds and crop seeds to farmers when the water has not run out is in response to replanting.

"This is a necessary intervention to solve the problem at the end of our season," he said.

He added: "The water level is still low, some places still have possible and in some places where it is not possible to grow rice, we can replace some varieties that the government has provided. [...] Do not let the water recede until there is no source of water to grow more crops."

PM said that this problem was experienced in flood year 2000. 

The worst affected provinces are Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Pursat, Kampong Thom and Preah Vihear.

According to the report of the Disaster Management Committee, the 2022 floods affected 22 provinces, covering 96 districts, flooding 151,412 hectares of rice fields and 41,024 hectares of mixed crops.
