Japan Wants to Strengthen Economic and Security Cooperation with Cambodia

TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has expressed his desire to boost economic and security ties with Cambodia.

In a meeting with Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday morning, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida thanked the Cambodian government for accepting Japanese Self-Defense Force Ships to dock in Cambodian waters earlier this year. In addition, he mentioned that the work Japan is doing in Cambodia needs to continue, especially in relation to the economic sector.

As Japanese automotive manufacturing giant Toyota is soon to be established in Cambodia, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida asked Cambodia to continue supporting the arrival of more Japanese companies in the country.

In turn, Prime Minister Hun Sen said that Cambodia supports Japanese investors continuing to invest in Cambodia and hopes to discuss this further when he meets with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida again later this year.

Prime Minister Hun Sen also formally invited Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to attend the ASEAN-Japan Meeting and the East Asia Meeting in Cambodia later this year, an invitation which the Japanese Prime Minister accepted.
