Interior Minister Asks for China's Support in Halting Human Trafficking Rings in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH: The Minister of Interior, DPM Sar Kheng, has requested for China's support in the crackdown of illegal gambling and human trafficking in Cambodia, by helping to research, investigate and crack down on trafficking ringleaders in their country of origin where they have a network.

In a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, Wang Wentian, at the National Assembly on Tuesday, 27 September, DPM Sar Kheng expressed his thanks for China's special cooperation and mutual cooperation in preventing and cracking down on such crimes in the past. In addition, he said that the Royal Government of Cambodia has recently decided to establish a working group to crack down on illegal gambling operation, which entails the investigation, research and monitoring of foreign workers in Cambodia to prevent such problems from cropping up any more in Cambodia.

DPM Sar Kheng stated that Cambodia is also a country affected by those who take advantage of certain shortcomings that make it easier for criminals to commit crimes. In this regard, he requested the Chinese side to continue providing support through research, investigation and cracking down on gangs in the countries where they have a network of criminals involved in illegal cross-border crime, He said Cambodia will continue to work hard to investigate and crack down on those criminals who are in Cambodia.

At a recent ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime, DPM Sar Kheng also raised the issue of the need to work together to cut off criminal networks and punish criminals according to the laws in force.

Chinese Ambassador Wang Wentian thanked the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Ministry of Interior for their attention provided to this case and thanked the Minister of Interior for setting up a working group and means for the embassy or other stakeholders to provide information involving various transnational crimes.

He also stated that the Chinese Embassy has contributed to this work by continuing to promote the dissemination of information to the media as well as the public, to know how to get in touch with Cambodian authorities through official Facebook pages, and through the specialized hotline as well.

The Chinese Ambassador thanked the Cambodian authorities for intervening and rescuing Chinese victims to human trafficking in the past and congratulated Cambodia on the positive results of this important cooperation. He also said he is ready to provide cooperation and suggestions to the Cambodian side to jointly fight crime as well as the perpetrators involved.

DPM Sar Kheng thanked the Ambassador and Government of the People's Republic of China for their commitment in preventing and cracking down on all kinds of transnational crimes. He said that China is a strong and indispensable foundation for joint missions to eliminate fake news that portrays a different reality of Cambodia.
