Preah Vihear Provincial Administration Orders Suspension of Traffic on National Road 9 in Chaep District

PREAH VIHEAR: The Preah Vihear Provincial Administration has announced a temporary suspension of heavy vehicles on National Road No. 9 in Chaep district due to floods.

According to an announcement made on Monday, 26 September 2022, by the Preah Vihear Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport, heavy rainfall made the flooding situation reach an emergency level making it so that the roads and bridges would be unable to support the weight of large trucks. Therefore, authorities are temporarily closing a section of National Road No. 9 (from kilometer 560 to kilometer 561) in Mlou Prey village, Mlou Prey 1 commune, Chaeb district, Preah Vihear province.

The announcement added that the closure of traffic in this area will be in effect from the date of notification until further notice, to keep the roads and bridges from collapsing and ensure that travel is safe.

According to an announcement from the Ministry of Water Resources on 24 September 2022, some provinces in northeast Cambodia will see moderate to heavy rainfall from 27-30 September, combined with rainfall coming in from Thailand, which may cause lowlands adjacent to waterways and geological waterways to face the risk of flash floods.

These provinces include Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Ratanakiri, Siem Reap, Banteay Meanchey, Pailin, Battambang, and Pursat, while provinces like Phnom Penh will receive light to moderate rainfall. Coastal provinces are likely to receive more rainfall.

Cambodia is facing this weather situation due to the evolution of Typhoon Nuro, which originated in the northern Philippines, into Typhoon TY and made landfall in central Vietnam.

After passing through Vietnam and the Laos Mekong Basin, the typhoon’s influence on the atmospheric pressure and as an IS level storm will gradually decrease, after which the southwest monsoon will increase to a moderate to strong level over the sea from 27-29 September 2022.
