Cambodia Pledges to Suppress Viral Resistance to Antibiotics (AMR) in the Region

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia has pledged to curb viral resistance given the increase in use of antibiotics to treat Covid-19, stated a Health Ministry Spokesperson.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Health on 22 September on the prevention of viral resistance to antibiotics (AMR), the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Dr Or Vandine, said that viral resistance to antibiotics has been a public health concern before and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the meantime, the Ministry has collaborated with the relevant organizations to make a commitment to suppress viral resistance to antibiotics, which has come from their increased use to treat Covid-19 patients, especially without proper prescription and self treatment.

This health risk (viral resistance to antibiotics) caused by the unprecedented use of antibiotic medication, can be curbed through proper supervision and the use of appropriate health equipment, as well as by implementing appropriate treatment guidelines from health care providers.

Dr. Or Vandine said that Cambodia, as the ASEAN Chair, is continuing its efforts to prevent resistance to antibiotics in the region, with the department bearing key messages and important tasks as well as the next key steps to follow.

For key messages, the Ministry of Health indicates that antibiotic resistance has been a complex and and minor threat with greater future risk that requires a clear response, including the implementation of a multipurpose action plan to suppress viral resistance to antibiotics (AMR) and also to collaborate with WHO and other organizations.

The Ministry says that preventing viral resistance to antibiotics is set as a priority activity in the Cambodian Health Strategy Plan From 2021-2030 and in accordance with priorities in the region featured in the "For the Future" document of the Western Asia-Pacific Health Organization.

The Cambodian Ministry of Health will continue to strengthen governance coordination mechanisms through the creation of the Inter-Ministerial Coordination Committee (IMCC) to ensure effective governance and leader structures in responding to virus resistance to antibiotic nodes (AMR).

On the other hand, there will be a review of existing paragraphs, drafting communication strategies, to strengthen monitoring of viral resistance loads to antibiotics in Cambodia, the use of existing systems inside the country to improve the ability to surveille and respond to outbreak resistance to viral antibiotic drugs, the continued use of creative methods and to promote understanding and encourage strengthened cooperation in response.

Dr Or Vandine emphasized that Cambodia has implemented adaptive multi-field policy actions and methods facilitated by the Ministry to practice both in the health sector and other sectors, in order to address viral resistance to antibiotics.
