Minister of Public Works Confirms He Will Not Abandon National Road 4

SIHANOUKVILLE: The Minister of Public Works and Transport, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, has said that although the expressway has now been completed and will be operational soon, the process of repairing and developing National Road No. 4 will still continue.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday night, 22 September, during an inspection of the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol said that the restoration of National Road No. 4 has been funded by the World Bank and will be completed in the future. He stated that the reason for not undergoing the restoration work right now is because of the rainy season which effects road construction.

"We will not abandon National Road No. 4, we will continue to [restore] it and expand it from 7 meters to 11 meters wide," he said.

He added that the restoration process includes checking the condition of the road, which has some areas that experience flooding and need to be raised, and will also include building more bridges.

The World Bank has provided US $110 million in financing to the Government of Cambodia for the construction and improvement of National Road No. 4 in response to current traffic growth and to facilitate the heavy transport sector.

According to the Ministry of Public Works, the construction and improvement of National Road No. 4 starts from Bek Chan commune, Ang Snoul district, Kandal province to Bit Trang commune, Prey Nob district, Preah Sihanouk province. The project officially started in December 2021 and is scheduled to be completed in December 2026. The restoration process will include widening the road from 7 to 11 meters, improving the condition of 46 concrete bridges and drains, and building eight new bridges to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and resistance to floods.
