ASEAN Must Work Together to Respond to New Trends in Global Trade

SIEM REAP: The 2022 ASEAN Chairman, Prime Minister Hun Sen, has called for a timely response to new trade trends, to promote the establishment of a global framework for international trade as well as to serve the interests of all countries in a transparent and non-discriminatory manner.

During the Opening of the 54th ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting (54th AEM) and Related Meetings held in Siem Reap on Wednesday morning, 14 September, Prime Minister Hun Sen stated that an important issue for ASEAN to consider is the way the region responds and keeps up with the latest trends in global trade.

He said that the way to get a timely response is to require ASEAN as a whole to coordinate and promote the establishment of a global framework for international trade that serves the interests of all countries in a transparent and non-discriminatory manner.

Major factors currently driving regional and global trade trends in a new direction are the energy crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, high inflation, climate change, the Covid-19 pandemic and other epidemics.

In his speech, Prime Minister Hun Sen also expressed confidence that ASEAN will continue to move forward with strength, solidarity, and friendship to overcome all challenges and build an ASEAN Community in line with the core spirit of ASEAN: “One vision, one identity, and one community.”

The Prime Minister thanked all ASEAN member states for their participation in these meetings as well as for their continued support to Cambodia in its role as the 2022 ASEAN Chair. He wished for the 54th AEM and related meetings to be successful.
