PM Hun Sen States Hun Manet is Qualified to be the Future Prime Minister

SIEM REAP: Prime Minister Hun Sen has reaffirmed his support for his eldest son, Hun Manet, to be the future Prime Minister of Cambodia. The Prime Minister said that Hun Manet is qualified to lead the country.

Speaking at a public forum during a meeting with residents in Run Ta Ek village, Banteay Srei district, Siem Reap province, on Tuesday morning, 13 September, Prime Minister Hun Sen stated that even if he were to resign, there would be no other party to replace the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP).

He also spoke of the future candidacy for Prime Minister of Cambodia and said that he believes Hun Manet is qualified to lead the country.

"It is only an issue that Manet was born my child. But I would like to confirm that no matter who Hun Manet is, I would continue to support him. Because [he is] qualified, it is not [because I want to] support my own children! I support anyone who can lead the CPP, who can lead Cambodia,” said Prime Minister Hun Sen.

He also expressed confidence that Hun Manet will continue to build a prosperous Cambodia after him.

Hun Manet was voted by the Central Committee of the CPP on 24 December 2021 as the future Prime Ministerial candidate. This vote was supported by all members of the party.

Hun Manet, 44, is the eldest son of Prime Minister Hun Sen. He was the first Cambodian to graduate from West Point Military Academy in the United States and also holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. At present, Hun Manet has the rank of a 3-Star Lieutenant General, and is the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and the Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army.
