Indian Embassy Launches Video Series on Major Temples in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH: The Embassy of India in Cambodia launched a video series depicting major Cambodian temples with significant Indian influences at the Embassy premises on 12 August. The launch event was graced by the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Culture, Hab Touch, other officials as well as students from the Royal University of Fine Arts.

According to a press release issued by the Indian Embassy, the event was launched as part of the Embassy’s ‘Iconic Week’ celebration, under the Indian Government’s ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ initiative, from 8-16 August 2022, culminating in a grand reception to mark the 75th Anniversary of India’s independence.

‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ is an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of India’s progress, history, culture and achievements.

The Indian Ambassador, Dr. Devyani Khobragade, and Secretary of State Hab Touch co-launched the 20-video series covering many significant temples in Cambodia, including Angkor Wat, Preah Vihear, Chisor Temple, Ta Phrom Temple, and more. The press release stated that these temples have strong Indian connections as they have prominent depictions of Hindu gods, such as Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Ganesh.

India was the first country to undertake restoration and conservation work of Angkor Wat after the Khmer Rouge regime from 1986-1993 and remains actively engaged in the Conservation of Preah Vihear and Ta Prohm temples, the press release underlined.

During the launch event, Ambassador Khobragade highlighted the shared heritage and culture between India and Cambodia and conveyed India’s commitment to reach out to the Cambodian people for further people-to-people contacts during the 70th anniversary of India-Cambodia bilateral relations in 2022.

Secretary of State Hab Touch also thanked the Indian Embassy for the initiative and said he hopes that the videos will help the people of India and Cambodia better understand and explore this shared cultural heritage. He also said he hopes more Indians will visit the majestic temples of Cambodia as a result of this series.

The new video series will soon become available on the various social media channels of the Embassy of India in Phnom Penh.
