BREAKING NEWS: PM Approves Draft Constitution and Assigns Minister of Justice to Hold Press Conference

PHNOM PENH: The Spokesperson of the Royal Government, Phay Siphan, has said that during the meeting of the Council of Ministers on Friday morning, 8 July, the Council fully approved the draft Constitution, and Prime Minister Hun Sen ordered the Minister of Justice to prepare to hold a press conference related to this important draft law.

Spokesperson Phay Siphan did not specify where the draft Constitution was to be amended and only stated that "the details of the amendment to the constitution are to maintain the normal functioning of the administration as well as the interests of necessity to the people.”

He said that the Minister of Justice, Koeut Rith, will hold a press conference later regarding this case.

The New Chapter 15 of the Cambodian Constitution on the Power of Revision and Amendment, Article 151 of the new Constitution, states that the initiation of a revision or amendment to the Constitution is the prerogative of the King, the Prime Minister, and the President of the National Assembly, at the request of at least one-fourth of the National Assembly as a whole. A revision or amendment of the Constitution shall be made through a constitutional law passed by the National Assembly with a two-thirds majority voting in favor.
