Phnom Penh: The former chairman of the First Commission of the National Assembly, Mr. Prach Chan, has been nominated to be the next chairman of the National Election Committee (NEC). This has been confirmed by the National Assembly’s Secretary-General, Mr. Leng Peng Long.
His nomination was put forward by the ruling Cambodian People's Party, the CPP. Having received the party’s letter, the National Assembly will now convene a meeting of the Standing Committee to determine the next plenary session during which a vote on Mr. Prach Chan’s nomination will be held. In line with Cambodia’s constitution, Mr. Prach Chan has accordingly resigned as Chairman of the First Commission and as a member of the National Assembly, pending the vote.
Procedures for the election of a new chairman for the National Election Committee were kick-started by the resignation on 1 June of Mr. Sikh Bun Hok, who stepped down for health reasons. He’d served for six years. If confirmed by a vote in the National Assembly, Mr. Prach Chan’s first job as the new chairman of the NEC will be to organise the next Commune Elections, scheduled to be held in June 2022.
