Laws Governing Food Safety Standards Are in Place

Phnom Penh: The Food Safety Law was signed into law by His Majesty the King on 8 June 2022.

This law has 11 Chapters and 43 Articles, designed in accordance with the requirements of the global trend of international trade and in accordance with the Royal Government's work program 2012-2015 related to the trade sector, Cambodia has an obligation to establish a strong legal system in response to the international excellence of Cambodia's economic integration into the region and the world.

Importance of Food Safety Laws The draft law on food safety is important to set the basic principles to promote food products that are safe and in line with the standards set to ensure the level of protection of life and health of the people, ensure the effectiveness of protecting the interests of consumers, and reducing the poverty of the people. Moreover, requirements in food production and trade require trade agreements on Sanitation and Phytosanitary (SPS) and Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) as a driving force for investment growth, boosting food export efficiency and ensuring equitable and fair competition in food production and trade.

Features of the Food Safety Law Food safety is a joint multi-sectoral responsibility that requires the involvement of all stakeholders to be responsible for the implementation, management, and quality control of food safety at all stages of the production chain.

The Food Safety Law also sets out the basic principles for the management of food safety from the farm to the table, which is governed by the relevant ministries and institutions and covers the scope of food inspection and management of food business activities in Cambodia at all stages of the production chain.
