UPF Seeks PM Hun Sen’s Advice on Making Institutions Play a More Important Role in World Peace

Phnom Penh: The Director General of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF), Yun Young-ho, has said that the presentation of Prime Minister Hun Sen's history at the UPF’s World Summit 2022 greatly impressed the international community, so he asks the Prime Minister for recommendations on how institutions can play a more important role in building world peace. The Director General made these remarks while meeting with Prime Minister Hun Sen on Saturday morning, 4 June.

During the meeting, Mr. Yun Young-ho thanked the Royal Government of Cambodia for inviting the UPF as an observer for the 5th Commune / District Council Election 2022. He said that the Prime Minister’s efforts to bring peace to Cambodia have attracted a lot of international attention after the UPF’s 2022 World Summit in February.

The assistant of the Prime Minister, Eang Sophalleth, told reporters after the meeting, that the UPF Director General “informed the Prime Minister that from receiving the Sunhak Peace Prize, the world was amazed,” and he noted the Prime Minister had struggled and overcome “many problems to liberate Cambodia from the genocidal regime, end the war, bring the Cambodian people peace, under one nation and one culture, bringing the Cambodian people stability, development, the ability to avoid the Covid-19 pandemic, and, in particular, democracy through elections."

In response, the Prime Minister thanked Mr. Yun Young-ho for accepting the invitation to observe the 2022 Commune / District Council election, which he said is a driving force for democracy in Cambodia. Regarding the UPF’s request for recommendations on how institutions can play a bigger role in ensuring world peace, the Prime Minister suggested holding a meeting between senior dignitaries and evaluators to coordinate work with other organizations on issues related to peace, not only for the Asia-Pacific region, but the whole world.

Prime Minister Hun Sen was awarded the Sunhak Peace Prize by the Sunhak Peace Foundation on 12 February 2022 in Seoul, South Korea. The President of the Sunhak Peace Foundation, Thomas G. Walsh, stated that Prime Minister Hun Sen was selected for this award due to his strong leadership as the Prime Minister of Cambodia for many years, and his contribution to building stability, economic development and peace in the Kingdom, as well in Southeast Asia.
